Mysterious Color

This textile painting was inspired by the Simonetti Carpet at the MET Museum in NYC. There are several layers of dye that have been painted and screened, but it became a mysterious process when it was immersed into a green dye bath, after the red and fuscia stages. After painting the red colors, a process of removal was done with the screens. At this point, the removed areas were white, and the red and fuscia were very bright and brassy. I decided to deepen the color, but the white areas that used to be crimson refused to take the green dye. The white areas that used to be fuscia took the green color at a regular pace. This I found to be most unusual. I had zero red dye run. It did not matter how alkaline I made the dye bath. The solution ended up letting the painting soak overnight in a weak solution of green, so both areas of white would absorb the green at their own pace, and not turn too dark and muddy. Sometimes, one can have unexpected, but amazing results if you don't follow the rules, and go with intuition.
